JAZZ

Savage’s place is at odds with the image of the man I have built. For someone so matter-of-fact, literal even, I expected more grays and practical angles. Not this.

The room is simple, and not big at all. There’s a large twin-sized bed, a wardrobe, a bedside table, shelves, and a tiny bathroom. But there’s so much color. It’s like someone exploded a watercolor palette right in the middle of the space.

The duvet over the mattress is deep blue, and I press a hand to it to feel its softness. It devours my fingers, my hand sinking to the wrist. A chuckle escapes my throat as I look over my shoulder, searching for Savage’s gaze.

He stands by the door, shoulders tense, hands fisted at his sides. “I will grab our burgers.”

“Good, I’m starved.” I pull back, grinning at the man. I have come to crave his presence, to wait for the time he comes to see me. Something about the way he treats me, adores me, makes me feel closer than ever of giving my heart away.

With a sharp nod, Savage leaves and closes the door. His steps creak the floorboards up the corridor and down the stairs. Twirling on my heels, I let my eyes roam over the details of his place. Several books take his shelves. There’s Pride and Prejudice, and Nicholas Sparks and... All my favorites.

My brows pinching over my nose, I laugh it off. How odd. I have never expected a man like him to read these kinds of novels. But then, it’s the twenty-first century. People are allowed to read whatever they will.

The bedside table holds a bright green coffeemaker, and a wine-colored wooden box full of tea bags. I have never pegged him for a tea person. In fact, he told me he prefers coffee.

To one side of the wardrobe, several boxes are piled on top of each other. There are all kinds of house appliances. Toasters and mixers, and expensive confectionery appliances. A red KitchenAid blender catches my eye.

What in the world is this? Savage looks like he’s planning to move... with someone who has the same taste as I do.

He walks in as the thoughts clatter inside my brain. But one look at his hesitant face and I’m back into a giggling schoolgirl with a crush.

“Hope you’re hungry.” He says in that voice that gives me shivers. Savage holds two styrofoam containers, and he finds space in his bedside table for them as he comes to stand next to me. The room doesn’t seem big enough for a man his size, and he shifts, uncomfortably.

“I am.” My hands come up to his hips and I stand on tiptoes to approach his face. Savage holds me close, his lips brushing the top of my head. “What’s all this?”

“It’s... It’s for you.”

Pulling back, I study his face, waiting for him to laugh or tell me this is a joke. But he doesn’t. In his eyes, there’s hesitation and so much honesty my heart swells.

“For me?” I try to step away, but he keeps a brawny arm around my waist.
