LORI

The morning after “the kiss,” I woke up thinking about all the things I needed to get done. First up, was calling my boss and to see if I could take the leave of absence. I also needed to talk to him about changing the look of the show. I needed to explain to him that I didn’t want to continue being the cutthroat I’d been, I knew he might fire me, but I couldn’t continue like I had.

After showering, I put on some casual clothes and made some coffee. Then I ate some yogurt and made a list of to-dos by priority. I got my phone out and took a deep breath. I had no idea how my boss was going to take this, but I had put it off long enough.

“Stryker.” My boss’s deep, harsh voice made me cringe.

My boss never answered with a simple “‘hello.’”

“Hi boss, it’s Lori.”

“Hey, how’s my favorite sports journalist?”

“Pretty good. I have some things to talk to you about.”

“That doesn’t sound good.”

His voice turned suspicious; his prior good mood gone.

“I need to take a leave of absence for a while. I’m not sure how long it will be.”

“Why would I agree to that? Who do you think I’m going to get at the last minute to cover you? Fuck, Lori. This is bullshit.”

“You’ve given a leave of absence to at least two others since I’ve been here. Both men. Is that the issue? I don’t have a penis?”

“Don’t give me that feminist bullshit. I don’t have anyone to fill in for you and you aren’t giving me any notice. If you want your leave of absence, it’s going to be a permanent one. Your choice.” Bastard.

“I guess I’m fired then. Thanks-a-fucking-lot!”

I hung up and threw my phone on the couch.

I had known it wouldn’t be a pleasant conversation, but I didn’t think my job was on the line. Three years. I had brought up the ratings on Sports Talk by sixty percent. I helped build that program. He probably would have fired me over the change of direction I wanted to take, too. Fuck him! I’d find something else. Maybe go into newspaper, or I could finish my book.

I paced around my living room until I calmed down. I had money in savings and my trust fund, if it came down to it. I was going to help Ryan and Bertie and then finish my book. It was time for something new. With that decision, the knot in my stomach untied. My hands relaxed, and I shook off the bad mood Stryker had given me.

Next up, call Joe, the asshole. I set my phone up to record.

The phone rang for a long time. I was afraid it was going to go to voicemail, and I was ready to hang up when a groggy voice answered.

“Hello?” I asked.

“Who the hell is this? I’ve been up all night and now I’m fucking pissed that you woke me up. Unless you want to come over and suck my dick, sweets?”

“Um, no.
