NINE

Sparrow gripped the four shopping bags in one hand and held open the door of Gia’s apartment building with the other. She passed through and stopped.

“I forgot. I left my laundry in the building machines. I just need to swap out the loads.”

“I like laundry,” he said.

She laughed. “Nobody likes laundry.”

“I’ll come with you.”

“Okay.” She led the way. They only got a few steps before a door opened and an older lady popped her head out.

She saw Sparrow and did a double take. “Oh my. You didn’t tell me you were bringing home a big, strapping man from the market with you, Gia. I might have had you pick me up one too!”

Gia took Sparrow’s arm, and damn, that gesture did things to his insides he never saw coming. She pulled him forward.

“Mary Ellen, this is my friend—” She broke off, probably unsure what to call a man who wasn’t supposed to be on anybody’s radar.

“Mark,” he supplied.

“Mark. Well, hello, Mark. It’s so nice to meet a handsome man like you.”

“Mary Ellen, are you flirting?” Gia said with a laugh that transformed her normally serious face.

The older woman shot her a side-eye. “I was young once too. And I’m not blind yet!”

They all laughed.

“I see you’ve got bags to carry upstairs, and laundry to do too. I’ll leave you to it.” Mary Ellen wagged her brows at Gia, and a light flush tinted her cheeks.

She hurried him into the laundry facility, which reminded him of more than a few barracks he’d been in.

“You can put the bags down on that counter. I’ll just be a minute.” She took a step toward the washing machine. Sparrow whipped out his arm, barring her way.

Coming to a stop, she craned her neck to stare up at him. “You want to do this right here, right now?”

He issued a low growl. “You tell me. You’re the one who’s been having lurid dreams about me.”

“I didn’t say they were lurid.”

He arched a brow as he reached around her and dropped the bags to the counter. “What was I doing in the dreams then? Scrubbing your kitchen floors?”

She gave a little shiver. “You do floors?”

“For you, angel? I’ll do anything.” He closed the gap between them and kissed her. The moment her soft, plump lips brushed his, he felt his muscles relax and his nerves start to hum. She was in his arms again, and damn, having her there again told him that he wasn’t just fooling himself into thinking she belonged there.

She moaned against his lips and swept her tongue out to touch his. The instant he tasted her, his sanity fled. He lifted her. Set her on the counter. And plundered her mouth.

She parted her thighs to bring him closer to her, and he dug his fingers into her thick hair just like he’d been aching to for days. Slipping her arms around his neck, Gia wiggled closer until her breasts crushed against his chest.

With every heated glide of her tongue over his, he lost a little more to this woman.
