News of the murders had the city in shock and on edge. Rumours were rife that a gang of goth killers was on the loose, or that 12-year-old JR had been lured away by an adult online predator who used the evil-sounding VampireFreaks to claim his victim.

Dangermouse, the computer expert who ran a local community website, sat at his keyboard and began to post on his blog: “My Medicine Hat brain has troubles digesting a triple homicide in our community. It just doesn’t seem like that news fits here.”

Locals were flocking to his website looking for information and sharing their concerns.

“This really creeps me out,” wrote someone with the user name 1987 who once lived in JR’s neighbourhood. “When I was 13, 14, 15, I would take those paths during the night cuz I felt safe where I was living. Well, not any more. I don’t want my kids to grow up here!”

One person signed in using the nickname “Scared” and wrote: “I am now so scared this is going to start becoming a common story only with different people and children… The sad thing is it just isn’t shocking anymore now. You just read that and think wow I can’t believe that happened again.”

A person named Mo replied: “I don’t think it is cause for panic. This was a specific incident. I live a couple blocks away and although I did lock my doors last night, I was not any more scared.”

A comment posted by Vicki, who lived three blocks from the scene, read: “I am so sad and scared because my son is the same age as the boy who was murdered. I never thought this would ever happen in this town. I moved here from B.C. to get away from all this stuff. What has this world come to? … I am so very upset and feel for the family. My heart goes out to them.”

The murders of JR’s family in the middle of the night unnerved many people. Sandee Anderson, the owner of Tumbleweeds, one of the city’s better restaurants, was so afraid to be in her own home that she slept in her restaurant.

At the gas plant where Marc worked, employees were numb. “The reality of it set in on Monday morning on the drive to work,” says Wayne Chopek, the EnCana mechanic who had sat with Marc and Debra at the company Valentine’s Day party. “We were listening to the radio and when we arrived at work the pieces all converged together. Everyone was asking each other, ‘Is it true? Is it true? Is it true?’ It was confirmed it was true. Marc’s immediate supervisor came in and confirmed it. He had to identify family pictures and that.

“Our superintendent of the facility showed up that morning. EnCana had grief counsellors there that afternoon and we each got to sit with them one on one. This is a huge trauma to any community, let alone a place where he worked. Everybody at work was very impressed that EnCana felt the need to do that for us.
