An interesting twist because usually the knight goes to f3. Portisch’s idea is

that he can later bring this knight to g3 from where it helps to support a kingside attack.

7 ... Bd7 8 h3 Rb8 9 g4 Nd4

One of the points of White’s play is that after 9 ... b5 10 Ng3 b4 his knight on c3 will drop back to e2, this square having been cleared in the nick of time. Note that this is why White played 8 h3 rather than 8 0-0; he wanted to free the e2-square before Black got in ... b7-b5-b4.
