Chapter Twenty

Tempe

The rest of the week flies by. I start my mornings with a workout that often includes the guys and Meghan. I spend mid-morning reading and working on the assignments Lauren left for me. She left me an impressive amount of material and work, but I wouldn’t call it unreasonable. I finish two weeks of assignments in one. Meghan gives me her textbooks to read, telling me I’ll be the first student to ever read them all the way through. I continue to email my work to Lauren when it’s due, no reason to let her know I can handle more.

My afternoons consist of shifter training with Asa. He takes me out into the woods where we walk and talk about shifting. His lectures range from historical to fanciful. I’ve learned about the wide range of animals, how some families have placed differing levels of importance on shifting. He’s talked about what happens in his mind when he shifts, and what happens to the body. Meghan accompanies us on a couple of days, shifting into her snow white lynx.

He is polite and professional. He is also the only person in the house who shows no interest in developing a friendship or relationship outside of teacher student.

I’ve been in this home for almost two weeks. I’ve established a routine. I’m learning to enjoy the physical affection. All of my new uncles have found sneaky ways to spend time with me in between all the mysterious disappearing for work. Always willing to lend an ear, tell a story, or let me pick their brains for my reading assignments. Gradually I’ve transitioned from observing the family into participating in the family. People-ing has become my drug.

The swelling from my homegrown accessory has gone down. The redness is gone, leaving me a dime sized reddish lump. I’ve felt some pain and itching from the site around my right flank, but I’m convinced it’s the weather. I get dry skin this time of year when the weather changes.

Asa told me to wear my running gear to our session today, which I now have plenty of thanks to Molly’s magic clothing rack. I meet him at the front, itching to get outside into the late fall air. My brain is stuffed full, I feel like I can’t possibly learn one more thing until I refuel and refresh.

“Early as usual. I do appreciate punctuality. I thought this afternoon we could dispense with lecturing and go for a run. You’ve earned it.” Asa is dressed in gray running sweats and a zip up jacket that drapes across his chest perfectly. I try not to stare. Those sweats. I swallow.

“That would fantastic. Thank you, Asa.”

We step outside and head towards the path I found the last time ran. The crisp air has a bite. I shiver, although I’m not bothered by the cold. I’ll be pouring sweat and warm soon. Asa breaks into a run and I follow. I haven’t run with a partner for years; I find the silence companionable.
