Chapter Three

“This is what we’re going to do,” Gideon stated as casually as if they were discussing the planning of an upcoming civic event. “I’m going to make sure you’re safe. I’ll put security in place for both you and Drakonia, and then we’ll have sex until you’re pregnant, at which time my job will be done.”

She was beyond fury. He’d gone too far this time. Gideon had delighted in taunting her when they were young, but he wasn’t joking, and there was no excuse for his cold-blooded suggestion. His job would be done? Did he mean she would be done? Was Gideon looking for a stud fee? Of all the arrogant, over-bearing—

She was so angry, it took her a moment to see the light. She might not like his suggestion, but with her back against the wall, was it such a bad idea? A stranger might prove to be more trouble than her uncle in the long run, and what good would that be for the country? Blackheart had an unimpeachable reputation, and even if Gideon Black was known to be the hardest man in the organization, surely, in this one instance, he could do the job, and then get out of her life?

According to the constitution, she was supposed to marry as well as provide the country with an heir—a snag she didn’t want to think too closely about right now. As she studied Gideon’s hard, assessing face, she began to think his idea might have some merit. But what was in it for him?

“I would have thought that was obvious, Princess?” he said when she asked him. “Sex.”

Her mouth dried. “Sex?” Her throat closed on the word. The idea of sex with Gideon was both exciting and terrifying. The opportunities to make a fool of herself were endless. But she needed an heir. There was no escaping that fact, and maybe no escaping him.

“Shower,” she said, stepping back. “I’m going to take a shower and then we’ll talk again—if you’re still here.”

“I’ll be here, Princess.”

She didn’t doubt it.
