Differential diagnosis guides comprehensive intervention

Word Finding (WF) refers to the ability to retrieve words in single word or discourse contexts. Prevalence rates for learners with word finding difficulties (WFD) are high; 25 percent of learners with specific language impairment (SLI) and 49 percent of students classified as learning disabled (LD) have been reported with WFD (Dockrell, et al., 1998; German, 1998). These learners’ WF complications interfere with their communication. They manifest difficulties when answering questions (single word contexts) and when relating events (discourse contexts). Further, problems in WF compromise learners’ ability to succeed in school, especially when faced with tasks that require lexical access of words, facts, etc. (Borodkin and Faust, 2012). Learners with WFD manifest problems in oral reading (German and Newman, 2007) and reading fluency (Wolf and Bowers, 2000; Faust et al., 2003). Together these prevalence rates and research reports make this oral language challenge worthy of further study. Therefore, to provide professionals with information that will aid them in their work with learners with WFD, this chapter considers: (1) the sources of oral WFD; (2) theoretical underpinnings of WFD; (3) differential diagnosis of WFD; (4) comprehensive intervention; and (5) a summary and future directions.
