“So you wanna hear something crazy?” Sara asks as I’m packing my bag for Sawyer’s. “That guy from your class, Franklin, the weirdo who was like stalking you? He dropped out yesterday.”

“Wait, what?” I turn and look over at her where she’s sitting on her bed. I can usually tell when she’s kidding, but by the look on her face, she’s serious.

“Yup. I know his roommate, Mark. Said he grabbed his things yesterday afternoon, packed up his car, and literally drove home. No explanation. Just gone.”

For some reason, an uneasy feeling settles in my stomach.

“Really…?”

“Yup.” She nods. “And Mark was saying he seemed pretty messed up too.”

“Messed up? Messed up how?”

“I dunno, like he was holding his chest or something like he’d been in a fight. Like maybe someone kicked his ass.”

I know it’s completely wrong, but my first thought is, Sawyer.

But then just as quickly as I have it, I shake it away.

Sawyer the lawyer kicking a guy’s ass at my school? No, that doesn’t make any sense. He wouldn’t do something like that. I’ve seen how he handled Ted back at the bar. He has restraint. Besides, he was working all day. How could he have been at my school and at work at the same time?

No. If Franklin got his ass kicked, it was probably because he’s a super sketchy weirdo and he finally got what was coming to him. Chances are I’m not the only girl he’s been doing that sort of thing with, and there are a lot of jealous boyfriends running around.

“Well, you play with fire you get burned.” I shrug. At least I’m rid of him now.

“Damn straight. Creepy bastard. You know, I’m kind of jealous though.”

“Jealous?” I ask, shocked. “How in the world?”

“I mean…no one’s ever stalked me before.”

I narrow my eyes at Sara. “Okay, you have got to be kidding me.”

Sara shrugs. “I mean...it’s kind of flattering, isn’t it?”

“Sara!” I gasp, hurling a pillow in her face. “He could have kidnapped me and like, skinned me and worn me like a raincoat or something!”

Sara laughs and rolls over on her bed.

“Cut it out, bitch. It’s flattering. My dude probably thinks your pussy drips mini gold bars or something.”

My jaw drops, and I just stand there looking at her for a long moment while she giggles to herself.

“You know, it’s a good thing you’re an English major, Sara. You have quite a way with words. You’ll be a successful writer someday.”

“And you?” She raises an eyebrow, pointing to my belly. “You’re gonna be a successful housewife and mother, huh?”

I smile and gently place a hand over my belly as I always do when I think about my pregnancy. Sometimes when I’m going about my day, I manage to forget about it for an hour or two, but then I’m reminded again, and the happiness flows through me like I’m a balloon being filled with warm helium.

“No, Sawyer is encouraging me to continue with my career. I may take a year off or so, but I’ll be a veterinarian one day.
