“You don’t treat me that way,” I admitted when Colton and I were alone, the twins taking a test drive of the Ford Transit van they had in stock even if it wasn’t what they’d end up getting.

“Thank you for acknowledging that, and I’m sorry that happened to you.” He cleared his throat and rubbed his hands down his pants. “And I apologize for blurting out that I find you breathtaking. A gentleman normally has more tact than that.”

“I’ll mention that to the next one I see,” I teased, bumping my shoulder against his when he groaned as if I’d wounded him. “Now that we know where we stand, do you want to see what I thought up for you?”

“Yes, but we don’t know where we stand, you do. Couldn’t you say I’m at least pretty or something?” he grumbled.

I paused, wondering how much to give his obviously confident ego. “You’re not bad to look at, and you’re very fit physically, but you know that.”

“You suck at compliments, even when I went fishing for it. Show me what you’ve got.”

“Brat.” I flipped back a few pages and handed him the sketchbook. “I’m thinking a cream puff tree. Use those foam cones at craft stores and load puffs on it with short skewers instead of sticking them on with icing, as that’s not very sturdy. Then drip green frosting over it and add in some that were dipped in other colored frosting for lights.”

“That sounds so yummy,” he chuckled, shaking his head. “I know you have ideas of filling.”

“Of course. Not everyone likes matcha as I do or as much as I do but—”

“I do,” he assured me.

“But it’s green, so there should be at least mint. I’m thinking chocolate mint and something fruity for the colored lights.”

“Please tell me lemon.”

“I was thinking that would clash with chocolate mint, but if that’s what the people you’re giving these to like, not what you want to eat, then fine.” He winced, and I burst out laughing. “I thought so. How about something safe like banana, which can go well with chocolate mint.”

“You’re right. I defer to your expertise.” He studied the drawing and then tilted it a bit. “You know, if you got foam balls, you could do the same with a pumpkin puff. Orange frosting and pumpkin spice cream inside?”

I snatched back my sketch pad and started it on an empty page. “Fine, you can keep coming to eat with us all the time.”

“Oh yeah? I had more.” He laughed when I waved him to go ahead. “I was thinking a Frankenstein head? Or maybe less detail with cream puffs so a ghost?”

“I like ghosts. Frankensteins if not cute can scare kiddies.” I bobbed my head and realized when I was almost done that we hadn’t finished earlier. “Right, back to the trees. So, that good for your holiday business gifts? Does that help you?”

“Yes, immensely as I think I ran out of ideas three years ago and kept going back to the same thing because my mother said so.
