I fill out the forms for my most recent client, writing out the details of the dog’s injury. Wednesdays are my least favorite day of the week. Screw that hump day stuff, it’s a day that has always dragged for me.

When my phone buzzes with a new message, I take the welcomed distraction, scribbling the last sentence on the form before reaching for my phone. I smile as Axel’s name stares back at me. Swiping my screen to unlock it, I open the message, and my grin grows wider.

Axel: thinking of you. I’m gonna make us dinner tonight

Lia: you’re the best thank you

Axel: anything for u

Lia: <heart emoji>

I hold my phone to my chest and close my eyes a second. Oh, Axel. Butterflies fly free in my stomach as an inexplicable sense washes over me, moving from my toes up to my head. Like warm sunshine when you just wake up.

He’s been everything I always imagined. We’re finding a balance between playful banter and intimate moments. What I love is that we are best friends before anything else, so the level of comfort between us has been flawless.

Although I wondered if the first time we had sex would be awkward, like the episode of Friends when Rachel and Joey are dating, she keeps slapping him every time they attempt to take things to the next level.

Thank goodness that wasn’t the case with Axel. Nope. Axel was…perfect. The man knows what he’s doing, and I’ll gladly be the woman on the receiving end. I also know he’ll support me and hold me when I need it.

We may only have been dating for a few days, but I can see this going for the long run, possible marriage, like Axel swears. While the idea of living in the same house had me concerned, we have agreed to keep our independence. I want him to spend time with his friends, and for me to go have drinks with Ainsley. Because let’s be real, I’m not calling Emma or her friends anytime soon for drinks. Or ever.

I file the forms I was working on and stand, ready to see my next patient. Spending time with the animals I treat always makes the day speed by and lifts my mood. What’s better than having animals love on you?

“Are you here?” Axel calls out.

“Yeah,” I drag my body into the kitchen, dropping my purse on the couch as I walk by it.

“What’s wrong?” Axel turns to look at me, crossing his arms. His eyebrows bunch together as his narrowed eyes assess me.

“Long day,” I sigh, walking over to him and hugging his waist. His arms are instantly around me, comforting me.

“Talk to me about it.” I shake my head, swallowing down my emotions. “Lia,” his voice is a gentle whisper I cling on to like my saving grace.

I take a deep breath and look up at him, licking my dry lips. “I went to treat one of the Henderson horses on an emergency call. Seems like their bull wasn’t properly locked in and it got loose, rushing the horse.
