This inn looks like a romantic 1895 Victorian place should. It was snowing as we came up Thorn Hill and the flakes made this Stanford White building look warm and enticing. Views of the Presidental Mountain Range can be savored from the porch.

Walk in the front door and you'll feel as if your grandmother still lives here. In fact, the living room has a Victorian sofa, gentlemen's chairs and matching ladies' chairs. The Steinway baby grand piano, an inlaid desk, an oriental screen, portraits and paintings complete the decor. We found this a familiar and comfortable place to read by the fireplace. The dining room also has a fireplace, brocade curtains tied with burgundy ribbon, Victorian lights and stained-glass windows leading into a second dining area. The pub has a fireplace as well.

Upstairs, one bedroom has a massive carved headboard, marble-topped antique chest with mirror, a Victorian rose lamp, sofa, Saratoga trunk and rose wallpaper. Another bedroom has a four-poster bed and more antiques. One more has welcoming afternoon sun and a view of the west garden.

Cottages include the popular honeymoon retreat, Trailside, with a cathedral ceiling and deck. Forest View rises up two stories and has a skylight and deck. Notch View is also romantic with an enclosed front porch and a view of Carter Notch.
