Chapter 10

Chuck throttled down and eased up to the curb by the clinic. He waved at Rebekah who was waiting on a nearby bench. He peeled off his helmet and gave a pained smile. “Hey there.”

“Ouch. You look like hell. Were those stairs made out of bricks?” She came over and put two testing fingers on his jaw, turning it left and right to inspect the blossoming bruise.

While the bending was uncomfortable, he didn’t brush her off. The touch of her fingers was a lovely counterpoint to the pain, and he had no desire to chase her away. “It didn’t catch me all that solidly.”

“Looks solid enough,” she quipped, then stooped to shove her healing items into the saddle bags. She seemed to have taken a wide sample, not knowing what injuries she would be dealing with.

Not wanting to dwell on the fight, he said, “Let’s get you home. Sooner you patch me up, the sooner I can crack open your bike and fix whatever gave up the ghost. Until then, you’re at our mercy for giving you rides.” Thinking about the trouble Tori had just suffered, he added, “Though maybe for the best in some ways. We haven’t been able to put any really good miles under our tires since those deputies started tailing us wherever we go. If this goes on much longer, we might have a case to bring to a judge to say they are targeting us.”

“Is it targeting when we really will break the law once they are out of sight?” Rebekah tossed out. It wasn’t all that funny, but he could tell she was trying to find the light side of the irritation. She shook her head. “Does seem like they are taking that snub we gave them personally.”

“I’m betting Collins went empty-handed back to Rex. Every day they fail to hang a ticket on us, he probably gets an earful.” He patted the Rebel’s gas tank. “Could be your turn to get a second bike. A nice cruiser. We can spend the next couple months on lazy tours looking at the trees. That can be fun, too.”

Rebekah finished with her packing job. “I’m not a complete fiend for speed. And just as soon as I can afford two vehicles, I’ll let you know. Until then? I’ll cling to my crotch rocket, thank you very much.” She slung her left leg over the back of his bike, then settled into the space behind him. Her arms hugged around his waist, finding holds on his hips that went beyond purely polite.

With her firm, slender body tucked in against him, Chuck felt his own interest swell. Her fingers stretched far enough around that she had to have sensed the growth in his jeans. She didn’t adjust her grip or shy away.

Instead, she noted with more than a little innuendo, “There are upsides to hitching rides.”

“That so?” He didn’t throw any flirtatious comments back at her. If they kept going like this, they weren’t going to be pulled over for speeding.
