PART THREE

TOWN

XXXII

T he house in South Bend was really rather airy and spacious, and all on a single level (which was very convenient for my mother), with a large back garden. It stood fast upon the southern margin of the Notre Dame campus, and behind it, on the other side of the door in the high wooden fence there, was the university’s principal graveyard, whose tenants proved to be the most considerate neighbors we have ever had. The institute, moreover, was an ideal setting in which to pursue both my studies and my continued convalescence. The directors and staff could scarcely have been more amiable or competent, and the other fellows all proved to be delightful company. Even the twice-weekly seminar lunches—where whichever of us whose turn it was made a presentation on his or her project, followed by discussion, all over meals cunningly devised to discourage even the faintest impulse toward gluttony—turned out to be enlightening, diverting, and extremely collegial affairs, which were actually some aid to me in recovering the healthy habit of human intercourse. And, as I have said, the relatively clean air in the town was a marked improvement over the oily, sabulous swamp-fogs of the city we had left behind. My lungs slowly began to improve. True, the first winter would prove something of an ordeal, but on the whole it seemed that the inflammatory episodes might become rarer. Not at first, admittedly. When I arrived at Notre Dame I was still fairly decrepit and pursive the better part of the time, and was occasionally rendered prostrate. But the burning in my throat and lungs sometimes subsided to nothing at all.

My work went well, moreover. I was scheduled, in fact, to run an entire conference on the topic of my research in the second semester there, and I realized after a few months that this would not be the Augean labor I had feared. By the end of the first semester, I knew I would be equal to the task—which was fortunate, because, despite the absurdly ambitious list of panelists I proposed, everyone invited agreed to participate. And, in general, this new phase in my life proved far more reinvigorating than I had hoped it would be. There were new friends to be made, old friends to spend time with, occasional guest lectures to deliver, Thomists to annoy, and coffee shops to explore. My wife’s burdens slowly eased as I became more capable, my son was growing into manhood and as a consequence becoming more immersed in his own interests, and my mother for a time seemed to be holding her own.

And, all the while, Roland was at work on his own plans and designs and explorations.
