WITH A BLOODY face and a rumbling stomach, I let myself into my apartment.

Upstairs, I skip the shower and go straight to the kitchen to pull my friend out of the freezer and pour a double, bringing it along with a maxi bag of chips and a tray of ice over to the couch. I wrap ice in a tea towel and hold it against my right hand, sipping from my drink with my left. In the process of breaking a jaw, I’m pretty sure I broke most of the bones in my hand. But in a couple of hours, my hand will be as good as new.

The vodka seeps into my system, numbing and distracting me. When there’s a rap on the door, I don’t bother to check who it is, instead peeling myself off the couch to open it, still holding the glass and the bruises on my face and shoulder on full display.

Parsons reels backward, taking in my appearance, his head shaking slowly. “What happened?” His voice is a shocked whisper.

Damn, why couldn’t he have shown up tomorrow? I would’ve healed by then.

“It’s nothing. I’m training.” I lean against the doorframe.

“For…?”

“To be a boxer.”

“Where? Who with? Give me names.”

“Or else what? You’ll arrest me for working out?”

His eyes flick to my glass. “I could arrest you for underage drinking.”

“Good luck with that. I could lodge a complaint for police harassment. Isn’t it a bit late to be visiting?”

We stand there in a stalemate until Parsons says, “I’m worried about you, Tamzin.”

His use of my first name is jarring.

I soften. “You know what? I’m kind of worried about you too.”

His eyes flicker, but he doesn’t respond, and I want to read his mind to know what is wrong with him, as much as I never want to be burdened with this information.

“Don’t be,” I say eventually. “I’m fine.”

“You sure as hell don’t look fine. What’re you caught up in?”

“Are you following me, Detective Parsons?”

“Why on earth would I do that?”

We keep eyeing each other until Parsons steps backward, shaking his head in defeat. “I’m here if you need me, okay? If you need help getting out of something, or anything… call me. Please.”

Tears spring into my eyes as I shut the door.
