CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Cece

Lunch hour was the soonest I would see him, and I nearly went crazy sitting through Creative Spell Writing for Casters and Magical Ethics, waiting for noon to roll around. My rumbling stomach didn’t help matters, either. Stupid Aidan and his breakfast cockblocking. Hunger made everything so much worse, especially my fruitless efforts to figure out where Maddy was. I nearly bit a keeper’s head off (figuratively, not literally) when she told me it was none of my business. After that, I kept my mouth shut and bided my time.

I didn’t run into the cafeteria like a wild woman, though I really wanted to. The uncomfortable hardcover hidden under my sweatshirt kept me from doing so, which was likely for the best. I was too good at causing a scene, and that was precisely what we didn’t need.

Stealth was the name of the game.

So I strolled in there like I owned the place, scanning the room for my sister and the arrogant fey with the cold blue eyes and the air of superiority that might actually have been warranted, based on what he could do. He emanated power when his collar was off, and if I was being really honest with myself, it scared me a little—maybe a lot. But I sure as fuck wasn’t about to tell him that. I’d never survive his ego.

Besides, he was still just a boy—a boy stuck in Wadsworth, just like me.

I slowed slightly as I drew near his table of gold-collared friends. When he didn’t bother to look up at me, I growled in frustration. Now he decides to ignore me? Not helpful.

It was clear that he had no intention of acknowledging me, so I continued past to where my sister and Rhys sat in silence. Even without my empath powers, I could tell something was off. He looked totally normal, if a little weary, but Maddy was stiff and pushing her food around her plate like a robot. I knew that routine, and it wasn’t promising. I hoped for his sake that he hadn’t done anything to her. I was wound way too tight for that bullshit.

“Hey,” I said, slamming down next to Maddy. “Everything good here?”

She jumped, then let out a frustrated breath. “Jesus, you scared me. Where in the hell have you been? I’ve been worried sick!”

“Sorry about that,” I said, wrapping my arms around her. She pulled me close, and I winced as the corner of the book cover dug into my stomach. It must have done the same to her because she pulled away to look at me with the same pained expression. “I’ll explain as soon as we get out of here.” I turned to Rhys. “Any chance we can eat outside?”

He shrugged, then turned to the nearest keeper. “Hey, Simon? Can we go outside? I think the sun might be good for Cece after…” He let his voice trail off for effect. The keeper’s stern expression didn’t waver, but he gave a tight nod. “Thanks.”

Rhys gathered his and Maddy’s trays and started for the door.
