CHAPTER 20

I stared at the Rogue Elf, immediately seeing the resemblance between us, but not wanting to believe it. How could this male be my father? It made no sense. And yet, I couldn’t find a way to deny it.

“You have got to be fucking with me,” I eventually said, still refusing to admit to myself what now seemed plain to me. Hadn’t he mentioned something about allowing lightning elemental magic to be used on him twenty-five years ago? That was around the time when my father was with my mother, when I was conceived. It added up.

“Tell me,” he said. “How is Lyn? I have thought about her many times over the years. I still believe she was my fated mate.”

Anger boiled up within me at the mention of my mother’s name. Him knowing it was almost complete proof that he was my father. It sealed it. But the way he so casually spoke about her made me clench my fists in rage. How dare he talk about her that way? Did he have no idea of the kind of life we had been forced to live? I knew not to entirely blame him, since if he had stuck around, Astra never would have been born. At least, not that Astra that I knew today. But he still abandoned us.

“She’s dead, you sick son of a bitch,” I said, seething. “You broke her heart and you walked out on us. You have no idea how hard life has been. And it’s been even harder now. Not only did she pass away with almost nothing to her name, but she left me in charge of my sister, caring for her, providing for her. But the hurt you gave her ran deep. It was so deep she never even told me your fucking name.”

He looked as if I had physically slapped him. I wish I had, because as far as I was concerned, he deserved it. There was no excuse he could give me that would make up for the hurt he caused my mother or the situation he had put me in. It was ultimately his fault that I was an unregistered Natural. It was his fault that I had no future in the magical world, that I was even here in the first place, needing to capture him so that I could support myself and Astra, sending her to college.

“It couldn’t be helped,” he said. “But I am distressed to hear you know nothing about me. I suppose it makes sense. I definitely could have handled the separation with your mother better, but it needed to happen. I won’t even apologize, because I know it won’t help. The past is the past and I wish it could have happened differently. All I can do now is give you a proper introduction. My name is Volodar Miaxalim, although I assume you will have known me by my alias, the Rogue Elf.”

Volodar. That was my father’s name. I finally had the information I needed to register as a Natural.
