CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Maîtresse Mambo Severine Eschete glided down the stairs from the second floor of the elegant old house that was her home. The walls were plaster, well taken care of, and painted pastel yellow. Soft colors were the rule in the residence with white stone, light wood, and warmth all around.
She was dressed in black, as was her wont, with a flowing gown that reached the planks and expensive rugs under her feet. The only exception was the necklace she wore, large pearls alternating with small human finger bones. It served as a reminder that death was part of life and to be considered every day.
She crossed into the sitting room, always her first stop of the day after awakening and dressing, and sat in an elegant chair upholstered with a swarm of pink and blue flowers on a white base fabric. No furnishing in the house was less than a century old, other than in the kitchen and basement, where most wouldnât see. Her family had prized quality and had demonstrated a commitment to it across generations of home decorating.
Her twins arrived immediately. Not hers, technically, as sheâd born no children. Her passions ran to different pursuits. The man, Vincent, carried an ornate tea set on a silver platter, with delicate china cups beside an artistically curved metal pot. She smelled the tea, her favorite blend. Its hints of cinnamon and ginger filled the air. He wore a black suit at her orders, although his tastes were more bright and brilliant.
The woman, Josephine, carried Severineâs first meal of the day, a homemade breakfast bar of fruit, nuts, and honey. She started every day identically and accepted no disruptions until she had at least eaten one of the two bars and emptied her first cup of tea. The female twin was clad in black as well, a long-sleeved dress that lowered at the neckline to reveal pale flesh.
Vincent poured, and the pair quietly stood while she ate and drank, focused on the pleasure of the experience. When sheâd finished, she acknowledged their continued presence. âWhat is it?â
Josephine replied in her elegantly accented soprano, âCherad has requested a meeting. He should arrive shortly.â As if to validate her words, the soft chimes of the doorbell rang in the entryway.
Severine nodded. âVery well. Please bring him his favorite beverage and some of these.â She gestured at the breakfast bars. Both bowed slightly and departed.
A moment later, Vincent accompanied the Atlantean, who occupied a place very high in her hierarchy of loyal retainers, into the chamber. Cherad performed an expansive bow, another Old World tradition, then quietly awaited her response. After a long moment, she said, âDo sit. Tell us what has brought you here. Josephine will bring food and drink for you shortly.â
He smiled, his white teeth brilliant against the darkness of his face, and lowered himself to the edge of the couch set at a right angle to her chair. His tone was quiet and calm as he reported, âOur facility in West Virginia is lost.
