Concurrent with the late Passages poems of Bending the Bow came a project of another sort, a series of translations of the Chimeras of Gerard de Nerval, which Duncan began in response to the publication of Robin Blaser’s own translations of the work.7 With old Spicer circle antagonisms in the air, and likely with lingering anger about Blaser’s affair with Jess, Duncan made public his grievances about Blaser’s reworkings of Nerval, including his conviction that Blaser had intentionally overlooked the French writer’s devotion to hermetic traditions. Duncan’s “corrective” translations appeared in Audit magazine alongside excerpts of his correspondence with Blaser. His offensive rivaled the viciousness with which he had attacked James Broughton in the early 1960s. In “A Footnote, April 1966,” Duncan wrote,
