“Alright, who’s ready for presents!” Dad booms out, and the kids all start jumping up and down. Asher tucks his feet under me and leans against my shoulder. Ever since we got home from the store hours ago, he’s been attached to my hip. While Shane and I were setting the table for lunch, I told him about our encounter with Carson, and when I told him what Asher said, he just looked at him like a proud older brother.

Shane has no qualms in telling me how much he likes Asher for me, but when he heard how protective he is, it only cemented his feelings. Reaching for my beer, I’m taking a sip when Seamus and Max coming running over, handing both Asher and I gifts, clearly wrapped by the kids, based upon the massive quantities of tape.

Taking a sip of beer, I set the bottle back down and dig into the gift they gave me, both boys bouncing up and down in front of us.

“No way!” Asher shouts, and I can’t figure out if he’s being serious or not. But then I look over and he’s pulling on a winter hat that’s designed to look like a hockey helmet. He gives the boys the biggest smile in the world, before yanking them into his arms, standing to spin around with them in his arms. I finish opening my gift to find a matching hat, only mine has a C stitched on the back. I pull it on my own head, and the boys leave Ash to come hug me, as well.

“Best nephews ever!” I cheer, holding my arm up to high five them, and they both take turns slapping their small palms against mine.

We all spend the next hour opening gifts, watching the magic of the holidays swirl around us. The twins open toys and books, and Mom cries over the cashmere sweater that we bought her. We got my dad a new fishing pole, and he made Asher promise that he’ll come with us on our annual summer fishing trip so he can use it.

Once we’re all done, Asher offers to bring everything out to his vehicle so that we can give the kiddos more room to play with their toys. He drops a kiss to my head from behind the couch and then he carries the various boxes and bags outside. I turn my head to see my whole family just staring at me, and I feel myself blush at their attention.

“What?” I ask, looking for where I left my half full beer. When I locate it, I find it warm, so I take it into the kitchen to dump, before grabbing a fresh one from the fridge.

“Nothing, honey. Happiness just looks real good on you,” Mom supplies, reaching out to pull me into a side hug.

“Thanks.”

“Do you love him?” Ella asks, curling up with her head on Shane’s shoulder, who just pulls her closer to him.

“It’s a little soon for that. But do I think it’s heading that way? Absolutely.
