Chapter
Fifteen
Sebastian takes my arm, and I can’t help but notice how careful he is in making sure our skin doesn’t make contact. We don’t speak as we walk back to the farmhouse. Even though I want to know what he’s learned, I’m glad for the silence. It gives me time to process everything that’s happened, from meeting King Matteo, to the kiss, and the flash of light that happened shortly after.
Everyone wants me to think logically about things instead of going with my gut. But no matter which way I turn things in my head, I can’t make sense of anything that’s happened. And this terrifies me. Because if I’m not Rachel and Matteo’s daughter, then what the hell am I?
Delaney is waiting for us when we return. Leaning against the foyer wall with her ankles crossed, she’s more like a worried mother than a vampire guard. She frowns at the both of us, soaked to the bone and dripping on the welcome mat.
Spinning on her heels, she snaps her fingers, which I assume is the signal to follow her, so I do. With Delaney in the lead, we climb a set of mahogany stairs that groan loudly under our feet. “The King has asked that you both,” she flashes a frown at Sebastian, “stay as our guests. However, as the captain of his guard, I have insisted precautions be made.”
At the top of the stairs, a long hallway stretches before us with four doors on either side. Delaney unclips a pair of gloves from her belt and puts them on. “Sebastian, you’ll be staying in the first room on the left. The doorknob is pure silver. We ask that you remain in your room until nightfall. You’ll find blood and clean clothing waiting for you.” With gloved hands, she opens the door and motions him inside.
He enters the room without a backward glance.
My lungs tighten, making it hard to breathe. God, why do I even care if he looks back at me or not? I hate myself a little for being so pathetic.
Delaney shuts the door behind him and removes her gloves, fastening them to her belt. “Your room is across the hall. You’ll find an adjacent bathroom, food, and clean clothing all waiting for you inside.”
“Thank you.” I start for the door when she snatches me by the shoulder. Her usual harsh expression has gone soft. “King Matteo will stop at nothing until he has Rachel by his side. You have nothing to fear.”
I smile, because I know she means well. But in truth, her words ring hollow. I’ve met the Mentis, and they’re ruthless killers with the ability to brainwash humans. As badass as Delaney is, this hippie tribe of soap-making, bird-changing vampires really doesn’t match up. Especially when their king is staked to his throne.
I dart inside the room before she can read the doubt on my face.
A lantern glows on a wooden desk in the corner, illuminating the bedroom just enough for me to get my bearings.
