CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The shaft is long and narrow, so tight that I can barely squeeze through in some places. It’s been very roughly hewn out of the soil and stone, like someone did it with little more than a pickaxe and shovel. Krak climbs down the rungs of the ladder just above me, happy enough with the arrangement, but Burnie goes back into the pocket dimension. He doesn’t seem too fond of tight places, and being a bird, I can’t really blame him.

In any case, I soon start to see flickers of light from below and feel my heart thumping in my chest. “Alright, everyone! I’m starting a poll. Give me your guesses on what we’ll find here!”

[RazorEdge: I bet it’s loads of gold and gems, and a fire-breathing dragon!]

[IceQueen: No, silly. This is a forest dungeon. It’s going to be a walking tree, or something like that, and the treasure will be some magic sap or something along those lines!]

[DarkCynic: My guess is that it’s another elemental, like that porter you fought!]

I frankly don’t know what to guess. My mind swirls with questions. Does the type of dungeon affect the boss, or the other way around? Is there really that much coordination between the dungeons, some level of organization about how they’re all put together? I don’t have the faintest idea, really, and I’m not sure I want to ask Krak for the answer. He’d be able to tell me, certainly, but is that really something I want to know?

In any case, the light grows steadily brighter, and I soon find myself climbing down out of the ceiling of a large cave. It’s probably fifty feet long, twenty wide, and seems to entirely consist of a single room. There doesn’t seem to be any heaps of treasure, or even a treasure chest, that I can see.

“Krak?” I ask as I hop off the ladder. “Is there any chance that these things are ever empty?”

Krak jumps down from the ladder and lands on my head. For a long moment, he just looks around.

I’ve never heard of an empty one before. My guess is that it’s a trap. If you start walking forward … just a bit …

I follow his instructions, slowly inching my way across the room. The chat cheers me on, and I’m not sure if I’m grateful or not for their support of me walking into a trap. The cave is rocky and doesn’t seem to have any stalactites or stalagmites. That, to me, means that it’s been built more recently. Which …

The ground rumbles, and suddenly, part of the floor in front of me heaves upward. I step back as I glimpse two large pincers and a great many legs, and as I reach the ladder, a massive, ten-foot-long scorpion emerges and snarls at me. Its barbed tail flicks up over top of its head, waving and bobbing, and I draw my sword and take a stance.

Yup! It was a trap. You’re welcome, Master!

Krak jumps off my shoulders and scampers up the ladder.
