Before we call in our first candidate, why don’t you tell us a little bit about him, Janice, since you know him,” Gary said.

Janice put on her glasses, gathered a pile of resumes, and passed them out to the team. “You’re about to meet a dear young man named Ronald Wilson. His mother, Renita, and I met in college when she and I pledged the same sorority.”

“Janice, I never knew you pledged a black sorority.” Jackson said what Peter assumed everyone else was thinking.

“Oh, no. Actually, Renita pledged my sorority, which was quite the scandal at our little Southern school back in the 70s. She was the only black woman to pledge. They weren’t going to let her in, but I fought hard for her, and she made it. We’ve been good friends since then.”

“Ah, a little nepotism here, huh?” Thoreau interjected.

“I think once you look at Ronald’s resume and talk to him, you’ll see that he’s more than qualified to serve as a teaching pastor.”

Peter took one of the resumes and scanned it over. Attached to the back of the resume was a photo of his family. Ronald, his wife, and three boys—all neatly dressed, all smiling, they looked friendly and approachable. Ronald’s wife intrigued him the most—she wasn’t black.

“Well, let’s bring him in,” Gary said.
