Chapter 26

Garrett marched into the waiting room at Pampa Regional Medical Center on a hunt for answers. Arriving at the crash site after Lacey was life-flighted to the hospital, he’d had only minutes to get the rundown from Smitty and Bo. Of course, they knew little more than he did. According to a Texas state trooper at the crash, a dead body was found on the side of the road several miles away.

The victim either wasn’t carrying an ID or it had been stolen during the incident. The trooper had described the victim as a middle-aged man with a medium build and dark complexion. That could’ve been a lot of people, but it sadly fit Liam Bayat’s description to a tee. Given Lacey’s accounting of what happened, there was no way he could’ve survived.

Spotting Garrett from across the room, Butch stopped his pacing and walked over. “Damn sure glad you’re here. Maybe you can get more information than I can.”

His dad must’ve assumed that because of Garrett’s romantic status with Lacey he’d get more answers. But the truth of the matter was he’d yield no better treatment as a boyfriend. It was an unexpected sting that made him even more sorrowful. He wondered if his caution in taking the next steps in their relationship was a decision he’d come to regret.

Garrett looked down at Asadi, who was nearly in tears. “She’s gonna be all right, Outlaw. I promise.” He pulled his son close, wondering if those words of assurance were more for himself. “She’s the toughest girl I’ve ever known. So, don’t you worry. Okay?”

Butch paused before speaking. It was as if he didn’t know how much to reveal in front of Asadi. “Doctor doesn’t know much yet. Said it’s going to be tricky.”

The vague explanation made Garrett more pissed than worried. “What does that mean?”

“Head trauma is complicated.” Butch gestured at the ER nurse behind the counter. “She said they probably should’ve taken Lacey to Amarillo but needed to get her into surgery immediately. Had to relieve the swelling on her brain.”

Ah hell. Garrett didn’t know much about medical issues, but he’d seen enough head trauma in Iraq and Afghanistan to know that everything that Butch said was true. Lacey could wake up fine or die on the table. The brain was a mystery, even to some of the best neurosurgeons in the world. What would happen next was anybody’s guess.

Understanding the need to keep calm and collected for Asadi’s sake, Garrett kept an even voice. “She’s in surgery now?”

Butch gave a nod. “Should be in there for a few hours.”

“I guess we just have to wait and pray then.” Garrett looked down at Asadi. “Why don’t you go ahead and take him back to the ranch,” he said to Butch. “Get some lunch and tend to the horses. It’ll take his mind off all this a little. Anything happens, I’m just a phone call away.”

Butch seemed to acknowledge that it was better not to be around. If bad news came, Garrett didn’t want it delivered from some nurse or doctor.
