Gourd: Gourds were used by pilgrims to drink water and wine.
Yellow Arrow: These arrows direct pilgrims at every intersection from France to Santiago.
Red Cross: This long, skinny cross with curly ends at the top and sides, and ending in a sword blade at the bottom, represents the Knights of Santiago. This 12th-century Christian military order had a dual mission: to battle Muslim invaders while providing hospice and protection to pilgrims along the Camino de Santiago.
Tomb and Star: St. James’ tomb (usually depicted as a simple coffin or box), and the stars that led to its discovery, appear throughout the city of Santiago, either together or separately.
