What Situation Did You Come Into?

Back in 1999, we had even more organizations and more people developing training (as opposed to learning) for the masses. Multiple groups were starting to dip their toes into the world of elearning, but no one knew what tools to use or what good design looked like. People were operating in the dark, each org and each person trying to solve problems on its own. Very inefficient, and frustrating for all concerned. It really started jeopardizing whether we could move forward and innovate.

A couple of people from different departments happened to connect and discovered that they were all trying to solve the same problems and find the right tools. So they decided to get together and share best-known methods (BKMs) with each other. That was the germ the led to the creation of the Technology Based Training (TBT) Task Force.

I came in a couple of years later, to a group of about thirty. Over the years I’ve built the membership in many ways, but we’ve never done a real marketing campaign. Most folks come in through word of mouth or when we reach out to folks regarding special events. From that handful of people, we’ve now evolved into the Learning Community of Practice (LCoP), a group of more than 350 L&D practitioners from across the business groups at Intel.
