Jo and the Whore

At the top of the stairs, Fortinbras took a right. The door to the apartment where Jo and her brother used to live was cracked an inch. He didn’t bother knocking. Pushing the door open, he walked in. Jo leaned over a girl who looked as if she were passed out.

“Sarah.”

He rushed into the room and bent over the girl. She was breathing, but her pulse was slow.

Jo looked up at him, her eyes wide with fear.

“She took something.”

“How long has she been like this?”

“Not long. She was acting weird, like she was drunk. Then she just sat down and closed her eyes and wouldn’t get up.”

“What did she take?”

“I don’t know.” Jo shook her head.

“Did you take some, too?”

“No.”

Fortinbras considered her for a moment before speaking. He realized his voice was becoming more and more challenging and hers more defensive.

“What is it?”

“I don’t know for sure.” Jo glanced at her friend. “But I think it’s the mushroom drug.”

“Shit. You need to stay away from her.”

“No, she’s my friend. You can’t tell me who to have as a friend.”

“I can, and I just did.”

Fortinbras pointed to the sores on the girl’s face, then her arms.

“Know what those are?”

“Yeah, she has a disease. I got some salve for her to put on them.”

“She’s diseased from having sex with men.”

“She’s not a whore,” Jo shouted and jumped up, backing away from Fortinbras.

He raised an eyebrow.

“I hate that,” she said, pointing at his face. “You look like you know everything, and I don’t know nothing.”

“She’s a whore,” he said. “This is a whore disease.”

Jo’s shoulders slumped. “She’s not anymore. She used to be but not no more.”

She plopped on the chair next to the window and stared outside.

“She might die.”

“Yes. This drug can kill, Jo.”

“I know. I've seen dead people at the hospital who took it.”

“Do you know how much she took?”

“No.”

“Then we have to wait and see if she wakes up. The hospital can’t do anything for her.”

“I know.” Jo’s voice sounded sad and dejected.

He took a good look around the room. The chair Jo sat on and the one next to it were ornately carved from hardwood. The pillows on the seats and backs didn’t match, but the mismatched appearance added to their beauty.

The question was what were they doing here? The table and chairs near the kitchenette were also expertly crafted. Like the chairs in the living room, the legs had delicate flowers and swirls carved into them. The room was clean and tidy. He moved into the bedroom and stopped at the door.

Jo had once told him that his furniture was junk. Now he knew where she got her sense of junk and good furnishings. As he considered, his mind nagged at him. A four-poster bed hugged one side of the room. Butterflies, flowers, and swirls decorated every exposed section of the bed frame. The effect was amazing, something from a book on fairies or the furnishings of an enchanted cottage.

The carvings on the small dresser in the corner were half finished.
