Chapter Thirteen

Our meeting with Uncle Harold went off as planned. The bar was on the outskirts of the city, about 30 minutes from our hotel. We arrived at the appointed time, and I told everyone we should split up and not enter as a group. Since the bar altercation, I was being extremely cautious, especially going into unknown territory. Also, we had decided not to go out unarmed. I said that Doc and I would go in first and meet up with Uncle Harold. Dimitri and O’Reilly would come in next and find a strategic place inside that could cover a hasty retreat if need be. Joe would come in last and find a suitable location to provide back-up if necessary. With that set, we entered what was obviously a small “locals” bar, not a dive, but close.

The bar inside was an L-shaped one with the long side parallel to the entry. There were maybe 12 to 15 tables and a dozen or so patrons. At the far end of the room, we spotted our uncle sitting at a table in the corner with an attractive Latina. As we approached, Uncle Harold raised his glass of brown liquid in greeting and said, “My favorite nephew, welcome, have a seat.” When we were seated, he continued, “Gentlemen, I would like you to meet Rita. Rita, this is my nephew, Colten Burnett, and his friend, Doc Greene.”

She smiled and said, “A pleasure, gentlemen,” and saluted us with her bottle of beer. Our host raised his hand and got the bartender’s attention and looked at us for an answer to the unasked question. I pointed at Rita’s beer and held up two fingers. He nodded and dug into a cooler as Dimitri and O’Reilly entered and took a table just inside the entrance. A few minutes later, Joe walked in and took a seat at the bar. I saw Rita checking them out before saying, “Looks like you have come prepared, Senor Burnett.”

I smiled and said, “Rather be safe than sorry. We’ve found you can’t be too careful around here.”

“True,” she said, “Very true.”

Uncle Harold then said, without looking in their direction, “The couple is Dimitri and O’Reilly, and the gentleman at the bar is Joe, all very good friends of mine.” With that, the bartender arrived with our beers, and we all started to relax. He continued, “You don’t have to worry; we are perfectly safe. I’ve got four of my own people here as well, so our meeting will not be interrupted.”

I casually glanced around the room and said, “Okay, then, let’s get down to business… we have a problem.”

Uncle Harold said, “Well, of course, you do,” with a laugh, “What kind of trouble have you gotten yourselves into now?”

I looked at Rita and then back at Uncle Harold. He saw the question on my face and said, “Don’t worry; Rita is my right hand, so anything you need to say to me, you can say in front of her. I trust her with my life.
