We searched all over my state of New Hampshire. Each place we went, no one had seen Ella. Each stop with a “No.” answer broke my spirit more and more.

We didn’t stop in The Diner’s because neither of us believe the kidnapper would be so careless as to have her out in the open like that.

It doesn’t help that I’ve been awake since four yesterday morning. I flew all night to get back home, and then some more with my brother. He even took over so I could try and nap, but it was no use. I was too wired. Too concerned for my mate.

“Mav, you have almost a full two days. You can find her. If not before then, surely you can track her through your bond.”

“Gods, I hope so. I want to use my bond, but I won’t frighten her. I use it to check in on her, to make sure she’s okay. She hasn’t sent any spikes of fear or adrenaline down the bond. So I know she isn’t in danger.”

“All I’m saying,” Gellevel starts, tossing his bag on the bed of the motel room we rented. “Is you could find her quicker if you used the bond.”

“I want to,” I say, sitting on the edge of my bed. “But what if the person who took her is right? What if she really is in danger? What if, her getting her magic back is what’s best?”

Gellevel shakes his head. “I get it. I do. But ease your worries and check in with her. See if she’s okay.”

“Fine. I’m going to shower. Then, eat, then try and talk to her. After that, I’m going to attempt to sleep.”

Gellevel mock salutes me. “Aye, aye captain.”

I shake my head. “You’ve been around our brothers too long,” I say, chuckling at his antics.

Once I’m showered, and dressed, I order some pizza, because I don’t feel like going anywhere. Gellevel takes the next shower, and I sit on the bed and send my awareness down the bond, searching for her as I did when I comforted her last night.

There’s sadness there for someone else, but it's not strong. I also feel – is she drunk?

She’s clearly not in danger, and enjoying herself enough to get drunk. Maybe the person who took her, lost her? And she’s coping by drinking?

“Ella,” I say down the bond. I feel her mind go on alert. I can tell she’s trying to clear the fog from her brain.

I don’t speak again. She’s searching for me, wherever she is, she’s looking for me. “Maverick?” I hear her speak the words out loud, and somehow, as she did last night, they’re sent down the bond, too.

“He’s my boyfriend.” I hear her respond to someone. “I swear I just heard his voice calling my name.”

Who’s she talking to?

“Thanks, Bohen. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

What the fuck? Who’s Bohen? Why does she sound like she’s familiar with him, like he isn’t her kidnapper?

Her thoughts are all over the place. Sam. Her parents. Sam.
