CHAPTER 14

Avery had already made himself a bed and fallen asleep on the sofa when Lia came out of the bathroom. Or, at least, he’d appeared to have fallen asleep. Facing the back of the sofa with his own back to the room, she couldn’t tell. Nor when she found him in the same position the next morning.

She hated to wake him. Worried he’d want to pick up the conversation she’d walked away from last night.

And why had she walked away from it? He’d only wanted her not to feel bad about what she’d done. Why hadn’t she wanted that comfort?

Because she’d wanted more than his words. She still did. That kiss had changed everything. The moment their lips had met, Avery ceased to be her childhood friend. He’d become so much more in that moment and it scared the shit out of her.

“Shit,” Lia whispered after dropping her makeup bag. The contents spilled across the hardwood floor making an awful racket.

“Not exactly the wakeup call I was hoping for but it worked.” Avery crouched down, picked up and handed over her bronzer.

“Sorry. I’m the loudest when trying to be quiet.”

“Yeah. I haven’t forgotten all the times you gave our hiding spots away playing hide and seek.”

“I never understood why you kept hiding with me. You would have done much better on your own.”

Pink tinted his cheeks as he handed her a handful of lipstick tubes. “But then I wouldn’t have been with you.”

As heat rose to her cheeks, she wondered if the color had been as obvious on her.

Avery stood then held out his hand to Lia. She took it and let him help her to her feet.

Don’t let go.

He did and Lia’s heart sank as he walked away.

“Have you ordered breakfast?” Avery sat on the bed flipping through the menu.

“Not yet,” Lia said.

“Do we have time?”

“About an hour. Haley asked if we could be there before nine.”

Lia went into the bathroom and began her makeup routine as Avery continued the conversation, slightly muffled, from the other room. “Do you think her sisters will cause a problem on the day?”

Lia sponged concealer under her eyes. “I hope not but I’m sure that’s why Haley asked me to be there so early.”

This was nice. Just going about their business. No awkward silences or scary conversations about things she couldn’t control. Even if her feelings had changed, at least it seemed she hadn’t ruined their friendship after all.

“Sausage or bacon?” Avery called to her about a minute later.

“Bacon. Duh.”

He chuckled before going quiet again. Probably on the phone with room service.

Lia kept her makeup light putting on just enough to show she put forth the effort but not so much she had to worry about suffocating in it if she had to get between Haley and her sisters.

“Your turn,” she told Avery when she exited the bathroom with all but her lipstick on wanting to wait until after she ate and brushed her teeth again.

Avery walked toward her. “They said it would be about fifteen minutes.
