Dorothy is a girl with tremendous power that far exceeds the power of the Wizard of Oz. Her power is real because it arises from a place of integrity. The path of integrity beholds our greatest resources. When we are on this sacred path living our truth, nothing can really harm us. We might get delayed, make mistakes, or become overwhelmed with fear, but living in our truth will always take us back to our yellow brick road.
Chapter Eight
The Wizard Unveiled
AFTER DOROTHY WINS HER FREEDOM FROM the bondage of the Wicked Witch, she goes into the courtyard of the castle where the Lion has been held captive and tells him what has happened. She tells the Lion that she wants to find the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman.
Baum wrote, “Do you suppose we could rescue them?” she asked.
“We can try,” answered the Lion.
With the help of the Winkies, who she now commands, Dorothy and the Lion find the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow. Both have been badly beaten. The Scarecrow's arms and legs have been pulled apart and the straw which made up his inner body lies scattered about. The Tin Woodman is not in any better shape. His tin is smashed and severely dented and he too is in need of repair.
The Winkies pick them both up and carry them to the castle for renovation. Once there, Dorothy has the Scarecrow stuffed with new straw and then she stitches all the seams. Within a short time he is as good as new. The Tin Woodman needs his tin to be hammered out and repaired by local tinsmiths. Then he too is as good as ever.
Now that the four of them are reunited again under very different circumstances, they rejoice at their new found freedom and position.
Baum wrote, “We must go back to Oz and claim his promise,” exclaimed Dorothy.
“Yes,” said the Tin Woodman, “at last I shall have my heart.”
“And I shall get my brains,” added the Scarecrow joyfully.
“And I shall get my courage,” said the Lion thoughtfully.
“And I shall get back to Kansas,” cried Dorothy, clapping her hands. “Let us start for the Emerald City tomorrow!”
After a long journey, Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Lion approach the gates to the Emerald City and ask for admittance. The guard is surprised to see them there again. When he finds out that Dorothy has melted the Wicked Witch, he excitedly opens the gate. Word quickly spreads throughout the Palace of Oz that Dorothy has killed the Witch and a huge crowd begins to form.
The next day, the four of them meet with the Wizard once again.
Baum wrote, “We have come to claim our promise,” said Dorothy.
“What promise?” asked Oz.
“You promised to send me back to Kansas when the Wicked Witch was destroyed,” said the girl.
“And you promised to give me brains,” said the Scarecrow.
“And you promised to give me a heart,” said the Tin Woodman.
“And you promised to give me courage,” said the Cowardly Lion.
“Is the Wicked Witch really destroyed?” asked Oz.
