BECAUSE RILEY AND ALFIE WERE both feeling dreadful, they traveled in the motor home with the Atlanteans. Beverly was in the driver’s seat and leading the way.

Danny was driving the rental car behind them with the six members of Jill’s family plus as much clothing and items as they could fit in it.

With Josh traveling with them, there were extra drivers for the car, which took the pressure off Danny, but as for the motor home, Beverly planned to drive it all the way.

There was still snow all around them, but the roads were clear as they drove away from their neighborhood and headed toward the highway, out of Denver.

Riley was seated at the small kitchen table beside Maggie. Alfie, Bastian, and Miss Pigglesworth were seated opposite them on the bench seat. Mary and Pea were up in the berth area above the driver while Gideon was forced to lie down on one of the beds at the rear, as he was just too big to stand or sit in the motor home.

Riley pulled back the blinds on the window and peered out. The road around them was empty. She checked the time and saw that it was almost eleven in the evening. They planned to drive through the night as far as they could before they needed to stop and rest. A two-thousand-mile journey lay before them, meaning it would normally take them four days. They hoped to do it in two.

Because they were so rushed to leave, they hadn’t worked out sleeping arrangements. The motor home was big, but it wasn’t big enough for everyone. But at the same time, there was never any talk of hotels.

This was going to be a long and stressful trip. Added to that was the fear for the Atlanteans. Mike’s arrival put a lot of needless stress on them, and it wasn’t good for their health. Maggie was feeling worst of all. After a short time, Riley had to get up and help her back to the bed, opposite Gideon.

Gideon raised his head when they arrived. “Are you all right, Maggie?”

Maggie nodded. “Just a little tired. It’s been a dreadful evening.”

“Indeed it has,” Gideon agreed.

When she was settled down, Riley covered Maggie in a blanket and leaned down and kissed her on her warm, fur-covered cheek. She felt Gideon’s eyes on her, and when she glanced over, he smiled and whispered, “She’ll be fine when we get her back to Atlantis.”

“I hope so,” Riley whispered back.

She returned to her seat and settled down for the long drive. As her own headache was slamming, Riley dozed off. When she awoke again, it was light out and they were still moving. Alfie and Bastian were leaning on each other and sound asleep.

Riley got up and walked a few steps forward, taking the seat beside her mother.

“Good morning, sweetheart, how are you feeling?”

“Rough,” Riley said. She looked out the window and saw the change in landscape. There was a dusting of snow, but not nearly as much as there was at home.
