Niels remains a keen mountain climber and, on occasion, has led amateur groups on expeditions to celebrated peaks. He claims that mountain climbing is the ultimate test of leadership. Crucially, though, you need to know when to turn back, when to abandon the mission. The leader has to make the right decisions before it is too late and they endanger themselves and others. Several years ago, Niels set out with a group of inexperienced climbers on the slopes of Mont Blanc. Their poor decision-making, despite his informed guidance, placed the group at risk. It provided a powerful glimpse of what can happen when self-knowledge and self-discipline are lacking.
