Chapter 28

Time flies when you’re in Hell. You’d think it would be the opposite. That the minutes spent down there would be agonizingly slow and torturous, but instead time had gone by in a blink. Jack and Sara had left around lunch time and returned in the middle of the night.

Up above them, the sounds of deep voices and footfalls let them know the kitchen was occupied and everyone must still be awake. When they got to the top of the steps and Jack opened the door, all the bustling stopped.

Sara took one look at Eli – who was the first face she saw – and just about melted.

She couldn’t explain the feeling that overwhelmed her. It was as if she’d been gone for forever and was finally back home and the whole world was right and good and nothing but nothing could strip the joy that danced under her skin. Whatever this emotion bubbling out of her was, it turned her into a spider monkey of a woman. She practically jumped into Eli’s arms and wrapped her legs around his waist.

“Woah,” he stumbled back, catching her, and before he could say another word, Sara kissed him hard enough to knock the earth off its axis. When she broke away, Eli chuckled, “Welcome home, baby.”

Blushing, she didn’t know how to explain herself so she didn’t bother trying. Whatever had gotten into her just now felt too good to fight or deny.

“Got one of those for me?”

Sara dropped down from Eli, spun around, and grabbed Tanner by the shirt. Dragging him down to her mouth, she used her other arm to clutch the nape of his neck, holding him to her while she kissed the ever loving shit out of him. Thing was, he was a little more prepared and returned the favor with some serious heat behind his tongue. When they finally broke away, both were panting.

“I think Lucifer did something to her,” Jack teased as he took a seat at the table.

Jack might have said it as a joke, but Sara knew it was also the truth. She rolled up her sleeve and showed-off the tattoo on her wrist.

The Hounds rushed towards her all at the same time, but Jack was the fastest. He grabbed her wrist and stared at the mark for a few seconds before cupping her cheeks with his hands, much like the devil had done earlier. “Why didn’t you say anything to me?”

“I wanted to show you all together.”

He kissed her. Not with hungry greediness, but with a gentle confidence that felt like relief. “This is good, love.”

He backed away so Eli and Tanner could have a closer look. Eli held her hand and rubbed the tattoo softly with his thumb. “Did the others come back, too?”

“Let’s see.” Tanner grinned, “Beautiful, take off your shirt.”

Sara laughed. Tanner’s command wasn’t just because he wanted to see if her other ink was back. She pulled off the hoodie, anxious to know the answer herself.

As she pulled her hoodie up and off, her neck became fully exposed and they all growled.
