CHAPTER SIX

“SORRY, GUYS, CAN I catch up with you at the restaurant? The listing agent wants some more information. Zeke, are you willing to go up to the listing price if needed?”

Shanna stood there shell-shocked. She knew her mom well enough to know she was telling the truth. There was no matchmaking involved here, but still...

“I’m willing to go ten thousand over the listing price, if there are other people trying to get it.”

“Great, that’s all I needed to know. Let me know where you wind up and I’ll meet you there as soon as I can.”

She looked at Zeke. “Don’t feel obligated to go if you don’t want to.”

“I’d like to find out if I’m in the running for the unit or not. Unless you don’t want to go.”

Great. Now if she said no, her mom was sure to look at her a little more closely and wonder what was going on. “I’m fine with it, just didn’t want you to feel pushed into something you don’t want to do.”

Like she did right now? It wasn’t that she didn’t want to go. She did. And she wasn’t sure why. Maybe she was better off not knowing, though. Surely it had nothing to do with getting a peek inside the man’s head as far as his taste in decor went. Surely sitting with him in a restaurant without her mom was better than having her analyzing everything either of them said or did.

Although why would her mom do that? Unless Shanna gave her reason to. And if she knew her mom, she would probably become so immersed in the game of buying and selling that she might not make dinner at all.

Leaving just the two of them. Her and Zeke. And a roomful of other patrons. Her mouth twisted. It wasn’t like they’d be at a private table in a secret room in the restaurant. Something that only happened in the movies.

“I don’t feel pushed.”

Shanna had to scramble to figure out what he was talking about. God. He was simply responding to her last statement.

She nodded as if she wasn’t totally discombobulated. “Do you like Cuban food? There’s a place on the bay that is authentic. The owner is my second cousin, actually.”

Her mom nodded. “You’ll love La Terrazza. I’ll call if there’s a problem on this end. In the meantime, go and enjoy yourselves.”

At least with Tereza there, there could be no footsies under the table. Not that there would be. Why on earth had she offered to introduce him to her mother? It would have been better off to leave their relationship where it was. Which was exactly nowhere. He could have found his own Realtor and Shanna wouldn’t now be introducing him to yet another member of her family.

Suddenly eating at her cousin’s place seemed like a very bad idea.

“Why don’t we take my vehicle, and you can ride back with your mom?”

Okay, maybe this wouldn’t be such a disaster after all. She wouldn’t be forced to play the awkward games of being dropped off at the condo.
