It was the next day, and I still couldn’t get Wade’s statement out of my head. This is how we cripple them… destroy it all. Wasn’t that what the government officials said to themselves as they stared down at the hardworking people who had carried the city on their backs? Or the starving and sick children that they’d arbitrarily decided didn’t matter because they were born in a lower section of the city? Could I make that same decision? Would that make me the same as the ones I hate?

But the reality was that this food wasn’t for the people. It never had been, and it never would be. Even if we offered it to them now, Lumen would find a way to make sure it was redistributed to the Uppers. Could we risk their lives by giving them out? I knew the answer was no, knew that the government would use force and pain to take those resources back from the people who actually deserved them.

Letting out a huge sigh, I kicked at the rocks along the edge of the garden filled with lush healthy crops, just waiting to be picked and eaten. The others were out exploring the walled-up section; no workers had tried to come into the place since we had landed last night. In fact, I had watched the guards leave, probably going home to make sure their families were safe given the destruction in the city. We were alone, free to explore as we willed. They were confident in the wall they’d built around this place, clearly a bit too confident.

“Those must be some serious thoughts.” Ren’s voice had me instinctively tensing up and backing away from him. He froze at my reaction, his serious face becoming oddly blank as he stopped where he was, not coming any closer. “Is this how it’s going to be from now on? Because of one random comment.”

My blood boiled at that, my frustration and fear gleefully finding a target. “A random comment? One that left people for certain death in a prison they were thrown into!”

“We gave them an out,” Ren replied slowly, his face still blank as he responded to my heated words. “They decided not to take it. That’s on them, not us.”

“But are we really any better than the people we are aiming to take down? That way of thinking is what got us here!” I gestured around us. Lumen was slowly dying while the food people desperately needed was hidden so close to those who needed it. “What makes us better than them?”

“Our job isn’t an easy one. None of the decisions that come with this are going to have black and white answers. There will always be gray moments where the results are both good and bad.”

“I’m not a child, Soren,” I snapped. At my use of his full name, I could see anger breaking through his calm mask, probably even hurt, though I pushed away any concern as my frustration continued to swirl in me.
