Unfortunately, sometimes the person you are interviewing will trigger your negative emotions and cause you to lose sight of what they are actually trying to tell you. Finding ways of coping with emotions is obviously beyond the scope of this course. It is important, however, to recognize that emotions play a major role in interfering with your ability to apply good Informational Listening.

The third impediment to Informational Listening is the vividness effect. This is something that happens in your brain whenever somebody mentions a topic that is associated with deep emotional ties or some event that had a very vivid impact on you. If you are the victim of a car crash, and somebody casually mentions a minor accident, the vividness effect can take over and cause you to start thinking about your personal experience instead of listening to what the other person is saying.
