Chapter 19. Creeper Van

ELI

I hate this part. She’s on her own. Inserted into the cartel organization to find evidence of trafficking, as we’ve been hired to do.

Our organization kept Line, despite her baggage, because she’d shown a certain low cunning and ability to sneak around. We’ll keep eyes on her as closely as we can, but she’ll have to rely on her wits and training to get the job done. Lovely.

Garrote puts up a front: all business. But his grip on my shoulder tightens and I know he’s steeling himself against whatever she might need to do to get the job done. Oh well, he had the opportunity to claim a personal interest to Tom and passed on it. This seems like a Garrote problem.

I’m not concerned, because I’m familiar with her effective tactics for keeping her legs closed when she’s been “abducted.” There’s her special time, stomach distress, pregnancy, she doesn’t like dick (I think that’s her play this time), or she is mute. She learned enough sign language to say she doesn’t speak, and so far, no one has called that bluff by answering her in ASL. An effective but risky move.

Smiling to myself I look over at him and the smile dies on my lips and his broody expression. I decide what Garrote needs is a diversion. Swiveling my chair to face his, I put my hands on his chair arms, meet his gaze, and try to project confidence. “Look, she’s got this. I know she comes off as a total twit—okay she is a total twit—but this is where she shines.

“She’s charmed. Wealthy, intelligent, pretty, and spoiled. You can’t fake that careless ease, and people let their guard down. Coupled with the fact that she’ll readily get high with them, and her best girlfriend is a pro, they think she’s another San Diego party girl, whose dad happens to be connected.”

Garrote protests, “Doesn’t it bother you when she has to fall all the way into the role? I couldn’t watch her do this, if she was mine. You seem like her possessive guard dog, but then you sit back and let this happen.”

I have compassion for him, even though it would be fun to let him suffer for a little while. “Don’t worry, she has it handled. She’ll fake being on her period with cramps, or make herself puke, or lie about her preference in partners. True, she’s had to kiss a woman or two or grab a boob, but it’s not her thing. At least, she hasn’t switched teams yet.”

Garrote decides, “I don’t care what kind of plumbing the people around her have. They won’t be touching her.”

I let his claim slide, as I don’t think he even noticed his wording, but I’m triumphant. We are back in the game. But now’s not the time to ponder who will be the center of this Concierge sandwich. That’s a problem for future Eli.

For now, I need to support Caroline on this job, and keep Garrote from storming the castle.
