CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT: MEMPHIS

Daniel and the Brothers of Chaos are sentenced the day that Kate and I pay for Locke to get ordained. We miss the sentencing altogether, but Rollins keeps us updated. The only thing that matters to me is the fact they won’t be getting out for fifteen years, minimum of ten served. That sounds just fine to me.

Black Construction started working on a place for us in Oregon. I told the boys that we were moving, and they were nothing but supportive. There are loose ends to tie, but we’ll get there.

Kate and I don’t have plans for a honeymoon, but that suits us better anyway. We talked about where we’d go, but staying in bed all day seems about as good of an idea as any. We both agreed that was about as close to perfect as it could get.

Kate looks up from a wedding magazine and smiles. “One day,” she teases, “How do you feel?”

How can I put that into words for her? I glance off, not hesitating but just… thinking. I’ve been doing that recently, putting actual thought into decisions. And Kate’s been letting go. We’ve been good for one another.

They offer to take me to a strip joint, or one of the remaining brothels left in town, but I wouldn’t be caught dead in there after everything that went down. We throw back some beers instead and eventually settle down in the old meeting room in the back of the first Black Construction warehouse.

“First one of us to tie the knot, Memphis,” Locke says, lifting his beer in a toast to me. The other boys follow suit, and we all drink.

It feels strange to be here at the head of the table again, knowing that this may be the last time for this chapter. I clap Adams on the back. “How does it feel?” I ask, smirking. “You’re gonna be President in a few days.”

“Feels like you should’ve left sooner,” he barks with a laugh, and we all join in with laughter of our own. But our laughter dies down quickly, and we’re left with comfortable silence surrounding us.

“Thank you all,” I say, trying to keep my voice from wavering, “for making it out here. And for everything you’ve done. I appreciate it, and I know Kate appreciates it, too.”

“Here here,” someone says, and we drink in relative quiet after that. We don’t need words. It’s the calm after the storm, that
