It was risky, but I didn’t care. I had been waiting for Layla since school let out, and the kids were getting impatient.

“Daddy, how much longer? Can’t you just send Miss Cassidy an email? We’re not fighting anymore. We are doing all our work,” Ivory whined from the car through the window.

I turned to face them. She looked irritated. Ivan was too focused on his tablet and did not care how long we waited. School had been out for an hour, and there were no signs of Layla.

“Ivory, give it a couple more minutes. I promise we’ll be on our way home soon.”

Ivory rolled her eyes and let out a loud sigh. Before I could check her attitude, she started to shout out of the window.

“Miss Cassidy! Miss Cassidy! Can you come over here, please?” She waved her little hands, signaling for Layla to walk in our direction.

Layla had a weird look on her face, but she still made her way over toward us. My heart raced. I fidgeted with my clothes and cleared my throat. Ivory and Ivan were fighting for the chance to hang out the window.

“Miss Cassidy, have you graded my test yet?” Ivan asked. He had bright eyes as he looked at Layla.

She smiled and rubbed his head. “I sure did… and—” She leaned in and whispered in his ear. A huge smile spread across his face before he gave her a small hug and returned to his side of the car.

“Miss Cassidy, can you please let my dad know that I am behaving? Also, let him know I’m the smartest in the class,” Ivory said, sticking her chest out.

Layla smiled. “You’re on your best behavior, and are one of the smartest, just like a few others. Remember what I said: Being humble gets you a long way,” she said. Ivory sat back in the car with a smile on her face.

I got out of the car, shutting the door behind me, catching Layla’s attention.

“Something you need help with, Ian?” She tried to avoid making eye contact with me, but I didn’t give in to her games.

“Lay, I am tired of playing these games. I won’t go through this lifetime again without you. Allow me to make this shit right.”

She shifted her weight from one foot to the next. “Ian, what happened the other night shouldn’t have gone down. I believe that we were wrapped up in the moment. We haven’t been in each other’s life for years. We shouldn’t start this confusion again,” she rambled.

I reached for her hand. “Letting you walk away was the biggest mistake of my fucking life. Not standing up for you was one of my biggest cowardly moves.”

She sighed. “Ian, that’s the thing. So much time has passed. How could we even travel back down that road?”

I stepped closer to her, placing a kiss on her forehead. “Lay, that road is a road we wouldn’t even travel again because this road is new. That is the past, and I am ready to leave it there.
