Chapter Fifteen

Vera

For the first time ever, I was relieved that Charlotte had left. The clock had barely struck noon, and she was ready to head back to her store to help with a shipment that had just come in. She and I had been upstairs working away while Drew was graciously downstairs pulling off the paneling and getting the space ready for the contractors tomorrow.

But now that Charlotte had left, the idea of getting to spend the rest of the day alone with Drew North made me giddy

And not for any particular reason.

Sure, he was massively good-looking, charming, sweet, and knew how to kiss, but there were a lot of captivating men in the world.

Yet merely being in the same room with Drew forced me to imagine alternatives. I’d done so well at compartmentalizing my life over the years that I’d shoved him into an unpractical, unapproachable, and quite unattainable compartment.

There was also a part of me that happened to regret every single decision I’d made in life from the moment I broke things off with him. Could we have had a family by now? A little Drew running around?

The thought made me chuckle as I brought him down two glasses and a pitcher of iced tea without the ice since I didn’t have a working freezer larger than a carton of eggs.

The moment I stepped into the room where Drew had been stationed all morning, I was in awe.

“How in the world did you get so much done?” I walked up behind him just as he spun around, and my belly did a flip-flop.

He shrugged, eyeing the no-ice iced tea and grinned. “I figured if I were lucky and finished early, maybe I could convince you to hang out with me a little this afternoon.”

Drew took an empty glass, which I poured the tea into, and took a sip. “Delicious and—”

I laughed. “Not cold?”

“Not cold at all.”

I giggled. “Sorry about that. I was hoping the tap water would at least be a little chilly.”

He took another sip and smiled. “Still as good as you used to make it.”

“You remember?”

Drew polished off the tea. “Of course.”

My pulse quickened at the thought. “I guess I never really think about your thinking about me over the years.”

He cocked his head slightly, and I spotted a dimple in his left cheek. “Those summer nights we’d spend together were pretty hard to forget.”

“At Cloudberry.” I nodded. “Those are some of the best memories I have of the inn. Everything felt so uncomplicated and sweet.”

He reached for my hand, and my breath caught.

“Until things became complicated.” His eyes stayed on mine, and it felt like all the oxygen in the room had been lit on fire.

Not knowing what to say, I just nodded and poured myself some tea.

“I have to confess that hearing Charlotte is your sister blows my mind.” He shook his head.

I was grateful he’d changed the subject, but the topic wasn’t exactly a light one.

“Yeah. It’s been incredible having her in my life for so many years, but I can’t help but feel guilty because none of my family knows.
