Chapter 20

Chiara Martes—August

“Little more,” Mason encourages from behind me, his hands steadying me by my hips and his breath tickling my neck under the collar of his shirt, since I stole his. He hasn’t worn more than jeans for most of the time he’s been here, and I think shirts are now going to be banned for him in my apartment. Forever. God invented pectoral muscles just for Mason King, I swear. “One final twist should do it.”

I bite my bottom lip and grip the pliers with all my strength, the rest of me balanced precariously on the edge of the tub between Mason’s legs. I start to turn the twisty piece on the pipe to the right, then stop when I think better of it. “You promise it’s not going to spray me?”

He chuckles, tickling his fingertips down my bare thigh before smoothing his palm back up. “I promise it’s not gonna spray you. We turned the water off.”

I turn forward and eye my target warily—I hate these pipes. Massimo hates these pipes. Mason’s been here for twenty-four hours, and he hates these pipes. But he found some old tools (of Massimo’s) under the sink, and he swore it wouldn’t be that big of a deal to make the gurgling stop. He also insisted on me doing it myself.

And oh my God, the crap that came out of that pipe… I was gagging for my life. Mason was practically talking dirty to it. At least he wasn’t totally grossed out, but I guess he’s seen worse while working ranches.

“One more turn, and then we’ll turn the water back on and check it,” he says. “I’ll even switch you spots so I’ll take the hit in case it blows.”

I whip around, my eyes huge. “What do you mean it could blow?”

I knew I should’ve called the plumber.

Mason rolls his eyes, reaching around me to grab the pliers. With his hands on top of mine, we make the final turn, though he instantly checks it over with his left hand like his bare grip is stronger than the tool. Actually, it might be. His hands are freaking strong.

“All right, moment of truth.” His grip on my hips guides me to stand, and I pull my leg from the tub as he scoots forward to the spot where I was. I bite my lip, hugging the pliers to my chest and wincing as he reaches around the tub to turn the main water line back on.

Nothing happens.

Mason glances back at me, chuckling. “You look genuinely scared right now.”

“I don’t want it to explode on you! These
