The Shield with two black braids is waiting for me at the end of the driveway. She wrinkles her nose at me, but smiles. I'm not sure how friendly - or certain - my own smile is in return. I go straight back to my dormitory and lock the door behind me.

I kick a cardboard box away so I can sit on the floor and lean against my door. He said he knew I would leave - he implied he would let me.

Felix put me on the travel ban.

Joseph blacked out and asked me to stay.

I bury my face in my hands. There are people in his basement.

Tears flood my eyes and I'm happy they come. I'm in desperate need of a good cry. Tears are poison leaving the soul, that's what my mother taught me. And from the way my belly heaves and my shirt gets soaked, I must be made out of toxin.

I've barely been here for two weeks and he's acting lovesick - after I was mean to him, insulted him, and attacked him. I've heard shifters bond fast and hard, but this is ridiculous. Even worse, I'm starting to feel a little bit like I'm the asshole.

He sent me medicine when I had a migraine, and a healer when I couldn't fix my own face. Maybe he wasn't trying to make me heal it that night to dominate me even more than he already had.

Maybe he just didn't like seeing me hurt.

He cooked me fancy chicken and god damned pancakes. He even asked me before he touched me.

And when he did, he kissed my throat and asked me to stay.

Then he woke up and told me he knew I wasn't going to.

All in all, it feels like a pretty fucked up situation, and I don't know what to do about it.

I've been sitting against my door for maybe ten minutes when I hear a knock.

"Yeah?" My voice is watery and coarse.

"You okay, Brinja?" It's Avalon.

I don't say anything. I'm embarrassed of the way I sound.

"You want to talk about it?"

I climb to my feet and open the door. She frowns when she sees me - I must look like a mess. But I'm not going to send her away, because I think it's time to get some shifter input on this mess. I move aside to invite her in. She does, stepping around boxes and piles of books and herb jars. There's hardly any room for her to move. I close the door behind her and scoop up an armful of clothes off my tiny bed.

"Sorry," I say about the mess.

"Louisa called me. She said you sounded upset."

"The one with the braids?"

"Yeah."

"I… think I fucked up with Joseph."

She perches on the edge of the bed. She's taller than me - taller than Joseph, even, and her knees have to come up into the air because there's no room to stretch her feet. "You mean last night?"

"No, I mean since the beginning." I scurry over to where she's sitting and start stacking up boxes so she has room to relax.
