CHAPTER ELEVEN

The riders made no effort to camp even as night fell. The drakes would likely not stop for long, and if the group remained near the mountains for any longer, it would be an invitation for the beasts to attack their camp.

It wasn't until the moon was high in the sky and the mountains were well behind them that the troop came to a halt. They immediately set defenses up and established a rolling watch to ensure there were always at least ten men to keep their crossbows aimed at the sky and ready for an attack.

Cassandra felt the fatigue fight for control of her body but even so, she refused to rest before she had ensured that Bandir was given water and food and he settled beside his brother. That done, she sat with the night guard to watch for any sign of the rearguard they'd left behind.

She had little expectation that they would have been able to escape at all and could only hope that their honor and duty kept them in their position for only about as long as it would have taken the rest of the group to make their escape.

Once that point was reached, they would have been able to find a reprieve from the assault and start their retreat. The drakes would be at a significant disadvantage the farther they traveled across flat ground, especially the larger, heavier ones that appeared to prefer climbing the rocks to flying.

Their weight would have made a flight over long distances a chore unless there was enough wind to carry them aloft.

But when the rest of the group began to turn in for the night, there was still no sign of their return. She searched the moonlight but saw no horses or even any sign of the drakes circling above their prey, trying to pick them off.

Cassandra steeled herself as her body fought to surrender to the weight of what she'd put it through during the day but she refused to sleep, not if she could help the men who had been willing to die so she could live.

Still, a little koffe would not have gone amiss.

"They died well."

She turned to look at the officer as he sat next to her and wrapped himself in a cloak.

"What?"

"The rearguard. They were under orders to ensure that you got out of that place alive at all costs. If they had thought they could make a retreat of their own, they would have reached us by now. They were brave men, all of them, but they weren't stupid."

"You don't know that."

"True enough. Maybe a few of them were a little duller than most. I blame the lack of schooling that runs rampant in these parts."

She turned to look at him again and made sure that he knew she did not appreciate his attempt at levity. It was a decent enough joke but a rawness within swallowed any semblance of humor.

He nodded and cleared his throat. "You know the kinds of men who joined Langven's Pack, yes? They aren’t…uh, all the most honorable of soldiers.
