Chapter Eighteen

Bear would never forget what he had just seen.

As his eyes connected with Ivy's, it was as if the blood rushing through his veins had been frozen. The look on her face was one of surprise and then of guilt. But not shame. She had not regretted the kiss she shared with the Unseelie Prince.

He replayed the moment in his mind over and over as he stood gaping in her direction. The flurry of activity surrounding them had stilled as every Fae in the room paused from their revelry to watch what would happen. Bear knew he should move, knew he should say something to Padraic, but his feet would not obey the commands of his mind.

Ivy had kissed Ardan.

Not because of wine or music.

Not because of her mother's wishes.

But because she had wanted to.

Ivy's desire for the Unseelie Prince was something Bear had been trying to deny since the night of Ivy's Binding Ceremony when their betrothal was announced. She might not have liked Ardan. But she was attracted to him.

Finally, though, King Padraic noticed Bear's presence.

"Prince Barrett," Padraic said. "I do not recall sending any invitations to the Winter Court, yet here you are. Do come in. There's no need to linger in the doorway."

Heat rushed to Bear's face, and he hoped he wasn't turning red. Clearing his throat and tearing his eyes from Ivy's he made his way into the throne room. He tried not to look again at Ivy on his way to Padraic, but when he glanced in her direction, his eyes fell upon Ardan, whose mouth turned up in an arrogant smirk. Never taking his eyes from Bear, Ardan stood behind Ivy and wound his arms around her waist. Still watching Bear, he pressed a kiss to Ivy's neck.

Like the snapping of a twig, Bear's brain disconnected from his body.

He changed the direction of his path, rushing toward Ardan instead of the Unseelie King.

Ivy's brows raised in shock as Bear stormed in their direction. Seeing Bear's fury, Ardan pushed her out of the way at the same time Jules grabbed Ivy's hand and tugged her away from the danger zone.

Ardan didn't even both to fight back.

As soon as Bear was close enough, he gathered his magic in his chest, and launched his fist forward until he connected with Ardan's nose in an icy blast of magic that sent him stumbling backward. Ardan had seen it coming and could have defended himself, but he'd allowed Bear to punch him. He wanted to play the victim.

But that was no matter.

Before Ardan could regain his footing, Bear gathered more power in his hands, hurling a blast of icy wind at the Unseelie prince. The floor beneath Ardan turned to ice as Bear sent another surge tearing across the floor from his feet. Ardan slipped but regained his footing in time to gather his own magic. Despite the blood trickling from his nostrils, a powerful rope of darkness swirled around Ardan's body until he sent it streaming forward like a ribbon that wrapped around Bear.
