Notes

I am moved here by Elise Boulding’s plea for an “imaging literacy” that would encourage the return of the capacity of human imagination to transcend the violence of the present: When I think back to the 1960s and its can-do optimism, I realize that I vastly underestimated the power of the warrior culture over the human mind, and how this would affect our capacity to image peace in the twentieth century…. Reconstructing the imagery of societies at peace, at a time when that imagery is disappearing from our [Northern] culture, will be a very difficult thing to do.… It is clear to me that the human capacity for imaging the good society is not lost, only weakened. It can be nurtured back to vigorousness, liveliness. Vigor in imagery leads to vigor in social action. All human beings have known times of individual despair, times during which they have had to “walk through to the other side” to begin life again. This is a time in human society when we must all help each other walk through the social despair. Retrieving and reiterating messages about the more humane social order we see on the other side is one of the most important things any of us can do.
