MAKING PEACE
Rama’s confrontation with Carter and first day of training had exhausted her, but she didn’t sleep well. Leda woke her up early. Still, she went along. She didn’t want to make waves—no more than she had already. According to Leda, Vincent had called everyone to the meeting hall—and he hadn’t said why. Rama had no choice but to obey Vincent’s call along with the rest of the tribe. She suspected the meeting would have something to do with her. Maybe Carter had said something about their argument in the forest.
Rama’s stomach twisted. What if Vincent punished her for running off in the middle of training? He’d outright forbidden her from leaving, yet she tried to do just that. Vincent had the power to destroy her.
She hadn’t wanted to cross him. Perhaps it was too late.
Her throat tightened. What if he had attacked her? Since her run-in with Carter in the forest, she hadn’t been able to get the notion out of her head. Even though he hadn’t—as himself—done anything hurt her, that didn’t make him innocent. And he was far from harmless.
In the meeting hall, a row of chairs formed a half circle around Vincent’s rocking chair. Rama wasn’t sure who’d set them up, but they hadn’t been there the last time she was in the hall. They looked like the same chairs she’d seen in the kitchen where they all had their meals.
Carter took a seat at Vincent’s left. He caught Rama’s eye before sitting down, and she looked at the floor. She couldn’t make eye contact with him without remembering the forest.
“Rama.” Leda nudged her arm. That time, Rama didn’t jump. Leda gestured to the empty seat beside her. “Sit here, please.”
Nathaniel sat on the other side of Leda, at Vincent’s right. As Nathaniel looked Rama over, his eyes narrowed. Why didn’t he like her? She’d tried to be civil with him like she had with Leda and Carter—to a point, anyway. She hadn’t seen much of him. He and Carter went out scouting or whatever it was Vincent had them do while Leda trained her. But when Rama did see him, she tried to strike up a conversation or at least smile at him. He hadn’t known her before she became a shifter, didn’t realize how much progress she’d made.
Before the mine, before shifting, Rama never would have spoken to a man on her own.
Now that she was a shifter, she wasn’t sure she wanted to. After what had happened with Carter, her suspicions had only been confirmed—men were just as awful as she’d thought. Maybe it wasn’t just her attacker. Maybe it was all of them.
Maybe even Nathaniel, the man of few words.
“Rama,” Leda said again.
She’d been staring at Nathaniel and hadn’t realized. He cleared his throat, shaking his head. Rama sat in the empty chair next to Leda, embarrassed.
She was still the new girl. The initiation hadn’t changed much, if anything. Then again, running off hadn’t helped her cause.
Once Rama sat, she looked around the room.
