Fifteen

Taylor was still hard at work behind her desk. Sam was nowhere in sight. I felt more at ease without him there. I was getting worked up about my mission. It gave me a new purpose. It was a reason to leave all this mess behind me, at least for a little while. I was ready for an excursion, just me and my boat.

“I googled Jimi D.” said Taylor. “I found him on Facebook. I couldn’t see his profile, but he had a nice head shot for a profile picture. I printed out a bunch a copies.”

She handed me a file.

“Good thinking,” I said. “I didn’t think of having his picture.”

“I am a lawyer, you know,” she said. “A quite capable one at that.”

“How many resorts did you find?” I asked.

“A crap load of them,” she said, handing me another file. “I put the major ones on top, the minor ones on bottom. I probably missed a few.

Kat figured out what was going on. She didn’t appear happy about it.

“You are going away?” she asked. “What about me? Where will I go?”

“We’ll talk about it later,” I said. “We’ll sit down with Elena and figure it all out.”

“No charts of the Caymans are available locally,” said Taylor. “They will have to be ordered.”

“Find the address to the Matanzas Inn in Fort Myers Beach,” I said. “Have them shipped there.”

“Here’s the information on Customs and Immigration,” she said, handing me yet another file. “The rules are quite strict, no firearms, no anchoring in designated areas. The main office is in Georgetown. They will come to your boat though. A lot of stuff is prohibited. Read the list. Also, you have to check in at every island within the chain. Looks like it could be a hassle.”

“You’ve been busy,” I said. “Thanks.”

“There is a marina near the main customs office. It’s called the Barcadere Marina. That looks like your best bet. Get a slip. Take cabs or rent a car to get around.”

“No credit card,” I said. “Remember?”

“The marina takes cash, as does the fuel dock,” she said. “The official language is English. You should be able to get around just fine.”

“Thanks for all of this,” I said. “Here’s enough cash to pay the rent and cover incidentals. You don’t mind do you?”

“I don’t mind helping,” she said. “But I’m not a servant nor maid for those girls.”

“Neither am I,” said Kat.

I’d almost forgotten she was in the room. She was clearly brooding. She looked angry and impatient. I needed to get her out of there. I packed up all the papers Taylor had prepared for me and started for the door.

“I’m sorry I can’t hang around,” I said to Taylor. “We’ve got to get going. I really appreciate all you’ve done.”

“It’s okay,” she said. “But can I have a minute before you go? Alone?”

Kat shot daggers at me with her eyes. She went out the door and slammed it behind her.

“Not real friendly is she?” said Taylor.

“We’ve had a long few days,” I said.
