Peter had a recurring dream for three nights in a row. Peter felt the darkness close in around him. The cold was penetrating his bones as he sat in the darkness waiting to see what would happen. The longer he sat in darkness, the more fear wrapped its cold tentacles around his heart. A dim light lit the scene before him. Peter was sitting at a table in a small, dark, smoke-filled ale house. It was so loud Peter could barely think.

“Peter, I will let you borrow this money. Remember, if you do not keep to our agreement, I will hunt you down and sell you as a slave to get my money back.”

Immediately, Peter woke up. He remembered that day. The memory played across his mind. In desperate need to repay money he owed from a gambling match, he requested money from his friend Ungar. The local ale house smelled like a mix of beer, urine and sweat. Peter could barely stomach the odor. “Ungar, my friend,” Peter called to him as Ungar walked into the room. “Come, sit,” Peter said as he motioned to the seat across from him. Ungar quickly crossed the room and sat down. He scanned the room looking for someone.

“Peter, what do you want?”

“Can I buy you a drink?”

“Sure, get me a bottle of their best whiskey, then we will talk.”

Peter was uneasy. Should I ask Ungar for the money? He seems unsettled and angry. We are friends, but what if I can’tpay him back in time? “Give me a bottle of your best whiskey.”

The bartender looked Peter up and down. “You think you can handle it?”

“It’s not for me, but my friend.”

The bartender looked over Peter’s shoulder toward Ungar. “I see. Well, if it’s for Ungar, here you go.” He extended the bottle to Peter without releasing it.. “Listen to me boy, don’t get tangled up with that one. He’s bad news.”

“He’s my friend.”

“Ungar is no one’s friend. He has killed all the ones who called him friend in the past.” The bartender continued to hold Peter’s attention as he stared him in the eye, releasing the bottle as he spoke. “You better make sure he leaves my bar by the time he finishes this bottle.”

Returning to Ungar, Peter placed the bottle on the table.

“Sit down, boy,” Ungar said as he opened the bottle and began drinking immediately.

Peter watched as Ungar slurped the foul liquid as if he was dying of thirst in the desert.

“Ungar, I have a favor to ask you. It seems I am in a bit of a pinch. I borrowed a great deal of money one night and now they are threatening me for payment. I need it by tomorrow night.”

Ungar’s beady eyes bore through Peter’s heart. “You want to borrow money from me to pay them?” His laugh was loud and haunting. “Peter, what will you do when I come for payment? You know I have no mercy to those who owe me money. Why would you even ask me?”

“I will have the money by…” Just then an argument broke out a few tables away.
