“What’s up, Princess?” I walk into Nyla’s room, her night light casting shadows across the walls.

“What were you doing?” She has her arms wrapped around her stuffed llama—a toy Sunshine got for her a few weeks ago.

“Talking. Why?”

“Do you like Miss Sunshine?”

I sink into the big chair in the corner. “Yes, don’t you?”

“Yes, but it’s more than that, Daddy. I don’t just like her. I love her.”

“I’m pretty sure she loves you, too.”

“Do you know what I’m gonna wish for when I blow out my birthday candles?”

I sigh, wondering where this is going. “What’s that, Princess?”

“I’m gonna wish for a mommy who loves me the same way I love her.”

Her pained, innocent words make my heart and spirit break. Any residual blood feeding my cock from being seconds away from touching and tasting Sunshine for the first time comes back to my brain. I get up and cross the tiny room, sitting next to my daughter on her little twin bed. With my back propped up against the headboard, I put my arm around her and pull her to my side so she can lay her head on my thigh.

I feel the silent tears seep through my sweatpants. Anger and sadness swirl into an emotional stew that sits heavy in my gut.

Fucking Heather.

Stroking Nyla’s hair, I keep my voice soft. “Remember when we talked about priorities, and how there are many ways to show others’ love and affection and one of those ways is by making them a priority?”

“Yeah.” She sniffles.

“Well, you are going to have so many people who love you throughout your life. When you are young, it will often be a maternal love, whether they’re your grandma, mommy, aunt, or other women who want to protect, love, and mentor you. Your mommy Heather loves you, but she doesn’t know how to prioritize others over herself.”

“She’s selfish.” Hurt and resentment lace Nyla’s tone.

I sigh. “Yeah, I guess she is. But you know, Nyla, she’s the one missing out, and I know it makes you sad, but you can’t force somebody to love you the way you want to be loved.”

“But everyone else at school has a mommy. A couple of the kids have two. I’m the only one that only has a daddy.”

I shake my head. “I don’t know what to say to that, Nyla, except I’m sorry.”

“I didn’t say that to make you feel bad, Daddy. It’s just something I think about sometimes.”

“Is that why you’re awake after bedtime?”

“Yeah. I had a bad dream, and I woke up sad.”

“Do you want to tell me about your bad dream?”

She sighs. “I was lost at the store yelling for Mommy, but she never came.”

Closing my eyes, I wrap my arms around her tighter. “I love you so much, Nyla. Miss Sunshine loves you. Nammy and Pappa love you. Your uncle Sammy loves you. All your friends at school love you. As a matter of fact, I don’t think there’s been one person who has met you that doesn’t love you.
